About the Item

A finely carved zitan wood display stand in the form of a round table, China, Republic Period, mid 20th century. The circular display stand carved from rare and precious zitan wood. Fashioned as a classical Chinese round table, the stand is supported by five cabriole legs with ruyi shaped feet, all joined by a shaped stretcher. The apron finely carved with a bat above each leg, and a carved and pierced ruyi cartouche. Smaller ruyi have been carved in relief. The stand also features a narrow waist carved with a double lotus pedestal design and pierced with a series of oblong windows. The top of the display stand has been left plain, highlighting the stunning grain of the zitan, with the tell tale "crab claw" markings and golden threads. Zitan is one of the two most prized hardwoods in the Chinese classical furniture making tradition (the other being Huanghuali). It is an extremely dense tropical hardwood that lends itself to fine and intricate carving. Pieces made from zitan were historically restricted to members of the court or very wealthy families.
