About the Item
Set alongside the four treasures of the study - the calligraphy brush, ink, paper, and inkstone - a brush rest was an essential fixture of the Chinese scholars' desk. This 19th-century ceramic brush rest doubles as a miniature shrine, the open interior configured as an alcove for a bodhisattva figure in seated meditation.
Awash in a blue-green glaze with sheer translucency, the small brush rest has three openings at the top for holding brushes, with one shaped as a peach - a motif for immortality. The sides have a raised design of flowering peach branches and the top is perforated with coin-shaped cutouts, a motif for wealth and success.
