About the Item
Rare, early 19th Century Antique Chinese Scholars Table Mirror/Screen from the Qing Dynasty. This collectors item is signed by the craftsman who made it and still holds its original mirror which is showing signs of ‘foxing’.
The framed mirror is removable from its open fretted frame.
Small table screens, such as this one, were often used to block drafts and other intrusions in a scholars work space. As with every aspect of a scholars studio, the screen would be carved with images which would inspire contemplation and focus. This hardwood example is carved with dragon heads and lattice work promoting all things good.
The mirrored surface of the screen provides the scholar with symbols of good luck and prosperity.
The Qing Dynasty was the last of the Imperial Dynasties of China. Under the Qing the territory of the Chinese Empire trebled in size.
