About the Item
Set alongside the four treasures of the study - the calligraphy brush, ink, paper, and inkstone - a brush rest was an essential fixture of the Chinese scholars' desk. This early 19th-century ceramic brush rest is upbeat and colorful, cloaked in an allover yellow glaze with flecks of deep emerald green.
The petite brush rest has rectangular form reminiscent of a low table or stool, complete with a decorative apron of openwork lattice. The top is fluted to support multiple brushes, an ideal accessory for painters with narrow brushes meant for fine calligraphy.
From the collection of Muriel Lubliner.
