About the Item

A highly unusual Japanese crackle glazed koro (incense burner or censer), lacquered and inlaid with mother-of-pearl embellishment, signed Gyokusen, Edo Period, early to mid 19th century, Japan. The crackle glazed stoneware body of cylindrical form and resting on three ruyi shaped feet. The exterior of the body covered in a thin coating of brownish red lacquer. A dense mother-of-pearl design has been laboriously inlaid into the thin lacquer in the fashion of the Ryukyu Islands. The mother-of-pearl design featuring three large cartouches on a diaper hemp leaf ground. Two with figural scenes and one with a floral scene. The bottom lacquered and signed Gyokusen on a mother-of-pearl plaque. A beautifully patinated copper lid featuring a hanahisi mon surmounts the censer.
