About the Item

A very fine Taisho Period bronze censer of bellied oval form, richly decorated overall with hand enamelled and 'shibuichi' 'shakudo' motifs, depicting geometric designs, pine trees, exotic beasts, priestly scholarly figures, mounted at both ends with organic-inspired open handles with fruiting vines. Raised overall on four short supports, and resting atop its original and similarly decorated ‘Daiza’ (stand), both exhibiting an exceptionally fine reddish-brown patina overall. Dimensions, 5” high (5.75” high on stand) x 13” wide x 7.75” deep. Combined weight, 10.3 lbs. Note: Shibuichi is a technique using an alloy of silver copper, whereas Shakudo is a technique using an alloy of gold copper. These techniques are recorded as having been used prior to the 18th century to decorate Samurai swords, but with the advent of the Meiji Period (1868-1912), Japanese sword makers turned instead to using these techniques on various forms of metal-ware decorative arts.
