About the Item
Transitional Dvaravati to Early Sukhothai Bronze Buddha (Pre-Sukhothai, Likely 10th–11th Century). This very special bronze Buddha represents a rare transitional moment between the late Dvaravati tradition and the earliest emergence of the Thai Sukhothai style. One could accurately describe it as pre-Sukhothai, with a likely date in the 10th–11th century (allowing a century earlier or later at the broadest range). It is an exceptional example from a formative period in Southeast Asian sculptural history. The figure is extremely thinly cast, reflecting a time when bronze supplies were scarce. Both the body and the base exhibit original casting flaws at the front—authentic, ancient imperfections consistent with early metal shortages and primitive foundry techniques. These flaws underscore the antiquity of the piece, not damage.
The face is remarkable, showing the evolution from the more serious, warlike Dvaravati expression into the serene, fluid, and joyful sensibility that would later define classical Sukhothai sculpture. This Buddha sits at the very cusp of a stylistic breakthrough: the transition from earlier Mon-influenced forms to the distinctive artistic vocabulary of the later regional states (Thailand, Burma, Laos, etc.). The calmness and insight in the facial expression are unlike any Buddha I have handled. The statue comes with a memorable provenance: purchased from a prominent Thai physician who stated that it had been in his family for over 200 years. After converting to Christianity, he sold his family’s Buddha collection to donate the proceeds to his church—a unique circumstance, and through it I acquired three extraordinary pieces, including this one.
A deeply meaningful and historically important bronze—rare, transitional, and filled with quiet spiritual power.
