About the Item
122/13thC Song Dynasty Chinese Terracotta Buddha in the form of an Architectural wall piece. These are sometimes referred to as bricks, though they are much larger and finer than any bricks you will ever see. There are different forms of them known in China throughout a long period of history. They adorned temple structures and other religious buildings and complexes. This is a particularly fine example from the Song Dynasty. There are very minor chips on the non-Buddha parts of the brick, but the actual Buddha is nearly perfect. It has as much finesse and expressiveness as I’ve seen in one of this type of architectural pieces. The figure is a forearmed Bodhisattva with a delightful round face and bulbous eyes-both signature features of Chinese Buddhas and bodhisattvas from this period. 11"H x 11"W x 1.75"D ) - 10.45lbs. This carved stone stele depicts the historical Buddha, known also as Shaka, Shakyamuni, or Siddhartha Gautama. Seated in perpetual meditation, the Buddha embodies virtues of wisdom and composure.
