About the Item

This remarkable Sri Lankan bronze Buddha from the Kandy period (circa 16th–18th century) is a truly exceptional and highly individual work, distinguished by its original mercury gilding, extraordinary casting quality, and unusual sculptural presence. Unlike many surviving examples, the gilding remains richly intact across the surface, imparting a warm, luminous glow that underscores the refinement of the modeling and the spiritual gravity of the figure. The Buddha is shown seated in meditation, with beautifully articulated robe patterns and a serene, contemplative expression. The surface displays minimal wear relative to its age, with the only notable loss being the flame finial. Evidence on the reverse of the base suggests the sculpture was once mounted, possibly with a separate base or backplate, consistent with Kandy-period temple or shrine use. The bronze itself is astonishingly heavy for its scale, signaling a dense, high-quality casting rarely encountered in Sri Lankan sculpture of this size. Having been held in a private collection for nearly twenty-five years, this Buddha stands apart from known comparables. No similar example has been encountered in auctions, collections, or published references, making it a rare opportunity to acquire a museum-quality Kandy-period bronze with exceptional originality, presence, and historical authenticity.
