About the Item
Exceptional and Unusual Large Burmese Buddha, 18th–19th Century
This compelling and huge Burmese bronze Buddha—standing a full 19 inches tall—is remarkable for several highly distinctive features that set it apart from traditional sculptural norms. Most striking is the figure’s individualized appearance. Unlike the standard idealized or canonical facial types used in Buddhist imagery, this Buddha appears modeled after a specific individual, a practice virtually unknown in Burmese Buddhist art. The facial structure, body proportions, and even the manner in which the figure sits all convey an unexpectedly European sensibility, creating a fascinating stylistic fusion rarely, if ever, encountered.
The tunic-like garment shows elements reminiscent of European dress, further contributing to its unique character. Crowning the figure is a rare and beautiful lotus-form finial—unlike any seen on Burmese, Shan, or other regional Buddhas—adding another layer of mystery to its origin. The sculpture retains a rich, untouched chocolate-brown patina, suggesting long-term preservation in a stable environment and contributing to its warm, contemplative presence.
Given its highly unusual features, one plausible historical context may lie in the period of British presence in Burma during the late 18th or early 19th century. Its individualized portrait-like qualities and blended stylistic elements could indicate a special commission or a diplomatic or ceremonial gift, possibly from a major temple, senior monk, or political figure. While the original story has been lost to time, the piece radiates the sense of a significant personal history.
Extremely rare, visually captivating, and unlike any known Burmese bronze of its type, this sculpture reliably elicits strong reactions—viewers invariably smile. A mysterious and important work for the serious collector of Southeast Asian Buddhist art.
