About the Item

Magnificent 18th/19th Century Mongolian Copper Repoussé Figure of Tsongkhapa A monumental and exceptionally fine Mongolian figure of Tsongkhapa, dating to the 18th/19th century and distinguished by its impressive scale, masterful workmanship, and extraordinary state of preservation. Standing an imposing 20.5 inches tall (23 inches including its custom base), this sculpture is executed in thick copper repoussé, giving it remarkable solidity, weight, and structural integrity. The serene and superbly modeled face—softly rounded, contemplative, and impeccably proportioned—is among the finest examples of this type to appear outside a museum or major publication. The figure is richly adorned with deeply chased robes flowing in elegant, rhythmic folds. Hands held in dharmachakra mudra signify the turning of the Wheel of Dharma, a gesture closely associated with Tsongkhapa’s role as the founder of the Gelug tradition. Its provenance is equally notable: previously owned by a New York collector who inherited it from a relative who had acquired it many years ago at an auction in Russia following the closure of a small regional museum in Eastern Russia. This offering marks the first time the piece has been available on the market, having served as the centerpiece of the current owner’s personal collection for the past decade. A museum-quality masterpiece and unquestionably one of the finest large-scale Mongolian Tsongkhapa figures one is likely to encounter on the open market.

9763 - Finest 18th C Tsong Ka Pa. World class. Measures 6.75 inches tall. Purchased 10 years ago from a high-end Silicon Valley collection for my personal collection, that was forced to be sold off due to divorce. The Collector had an extremely good eye and had managed to put together a world-class collection 20 years ago before pieces like this became nearly impossible to find. recently, and since I have medically retired and moved to Ukiah oh, I have decided to merge my personal and Buddha Gallery Collections and have put everything up for sale. I am in the process of listing the very last of my personal items that have previously and not been available for sale up until this point. I bought many of them for strong prices as I bought them as a collector who is passionate about Buddhist and Hindu sculpture, and who only buys what I truly love myself. I have been collecting for more than 35 years now, as my collecting tracks alongside my Buddhist Meditation and Buddhist practice. Note the very fine beating on the robes-the Promote the level of refinement to the casting, sculpting, and finishing required means that only a fraction of the top 1% of Tibetan bronze sculpture...
