Standing Buddha – Mandalay Period Burma (Myanmar), 19th Century Material: Gilt wood Dimensions: 105 × 50 cm This refined standing Buddha figure originates from the Mandalay period of 19th-century Burma, a time celebrated for its distinctive artistic elegance and devotion to sacred form. Mandalay Buddha statues are known for their oval-shaped faces, elongated ears, and graceful, slender bodies, often adorned with inlaid glass, gilding, and lacquer. While many figures from this tradition are depicted in a seated, cross-legged posture with a wide lap, this standing example maintains the same stylistic sensitivity in a rare and striking vertical format. Here, the Buddha performs what appears to be the varada mudra—the gesture of compassion and bestowal—with both hands gently extending downward. The cascading robe, delicate detailing, and remaining traces of original gilding highlight the exceptional craftsmanship of the period. Mounted on a modern base, the statue maintains both its spiritual presence and decorative elegance, making it a rare and expressive example of Mandalay-period devotional sculpture.
