About the Item

Rare 19th century Buddhist Taoist Prayer Board. Beautifully carved gilded calligraphy prayer board blessing. This is a singular solid board of wood. A very special and sacred blessing has been carved not into the wooden board but out of the wooden board. All the Chinese characters (letters) you see are raised out of the wood. A message to us that life happiness is within us and happiness in life should come out of us. This board represents a very powerful blessing of high regard. Translated to the best of my understanding the text speaks of "Namo The Great Merciful and Compassionate Guanyin "Bodhisattva". This is a mantra calling on the powers or talents of Guanyin as a blessing. In essence the blessing carved out from this single wooden board is to the highest powers of righteousness, integrity, resplendent virtue, compassion, mercy, and understanding, for all suggesting in a mantra form a blessing of the Bodhisattva Guanyin as inscribed. This is a rare singular art work, expressing and possessing a very powerful energy. The carved calligraphy in itself is a masterful Art work of Chinese Characters finely carved out of the wood. The entire surface of the board has been carved away and smoothed to raise and give importance to the writing. A laborious process of devotion. In Good condition as pictured, the wooden board is warped, with looses to the red lacquer and gilding. Over time lacquer has been applied to the surface to preserve this art work.
