About the Item

Ancient Sculpture Of Shaman, traditional Burmese art from the late 19th century, resting on a square base is depicted standing with a staff in his left hand and a sort of gourd and container in his right hand. She wears a red skirt with yellow-striped decorations and the tattooed body with black circles and stripes suggests a female body due to the presence of pronounced breasts that contrast, however, with the false beard on the chin and the male headdress. The posture is also peculiar in that the legs, disproportionately short in relation to the torso, are bent as in the act of unseating. Made from a single piece of wood this sympathetic-looking figure is in good condition apart from the integration of the front of the left foot and a small lack at the end of the gourd. The sculpture in question is an example of traditional Burmese art, specifically a polychrome sculptural figure of a Burmese shaman. These works generally date from the late 1800s, a period during which Burmese art reflected multiple cultural influences, including Buddhist and animist ones. They are often unique pieces with a strong spiritual and religious expression. In Burma during this era, the Buddhist religion was predominant, but animism also played an important role, so many sculptures were dedicated to deities, protective spirits, or religious figures. Burmese shamans played a central role in the spiritual life of communities, being seen as intermediaries between the earthly and spirit worlds; they often assumed special poses that evoked their power and connection to the unseen world. His upright posture represents readiness, energy and connection between heaven and earth. The standing shaman is in the act of acting: he is not in passive meditation, but active in his role as spiritual leader. He is probably performing a ritual or is depicted in the moment of trance. The stick is a powerful tool. In many traditions, it represents spiritual authority and connection to the spirit world. The gourd was also used as a container for herbs, medicines or sacred liquids, or as a sound instrument (as maracas, sometimes). It is also a symbol of abundance, healing and connection with nature. The sculpture is shipped from Italy. According to Italian law, a government license called Belle Arti is required for the export of any antique object. Applying for and obtaining this license takes about 2 weeks to be added to the shipping time.
