This antique palm leaf manuscript book from 19th-century Burma (Myanmar) is a remarkable example of Southeast Asian Buddhist heritage. Measuring 16 cm high, 48 cm wide, and 5.5 cm deep, with a weight of 2.12 kgs, it consists of many palm leaf pages bound between two original wooden covers and beautifully gilded with 24 krt. gold.
Commonly referred to as a Parabaik, this manuscript contains sacred text written in the Pali language, the ancient liturgical language of Theravāda Buddhism used to preserve the teachings of the Buddha. Such manuscripts were highly valued in monasteries as religious, cultural, and scholarly treasures. With its exquisite craftsmanship, original gilding, and well-preserved structure, this Parabaik is not only a rare devotional artifact but also a valuable collector’s item, offering deep insight into the literary and spiritual traditions of Myanmar’s Buddhist past.
