This antique palm leaf manuscript book from 19th-century Burma (Myanmar) is a rare and valuable piece of Buddhist cultural heritage. Measuring 14 cm high, 50 cm wide, and 6.5 cm deep, with a weight of 2.21 kgs, it is composed of many palm leaf pages carefully bound between two wooden covers and richly gilded with 24 krt. gold. Known as a Parabaik, this manuscript preserves sacred writings in the Pali language, the ancient liturgical language of Theravāda Buddhism used for recording scriptures and teachings of the Buddha.
Manuscripts of this kind were treasured in monasteries and passed down for generations as both religious and scholarly works.
