About the Item

An exceptionally beautiful, serene, delicately crafted Buddha head/bust - hand-made using the ancient Thayo technique which entails using a lacquer paste made by mixing lacquer with wood ash, rice husk, bone powder, and sawdust and applying layers to mold and sculpt the Buddha figure by hand to achieve the desired thickness and ultimate result. The process can take months, sometimes years of layering the lacquer to achieve the desired outcome. This work has an amazing glow/patina and features a naturally inviting serene slightly smiling expression. We believe this piece is from Burma but it could also be Northern Thai. But more likely from Burma (now Myanmar) as it is in the Shan (Tai Yai) Buddha style (youthful serene and peaceful face framed by elongated ear lobes) and as such, quite rare. Few of these Buddhas made it out of the country. From a prominent Northern California Buddha collection. We are listing it as early to mid-20th century but could be older. A stunning and contemplative piece. Would be a great addition to any Burmese/ Thai Buddha or Asian artifacts collection or an eye-catching stand-alone accent work in about any setting once properly mounted and displayed. Dimensions on stand: 21.5" High, 9" wide, 6.5" deep Head with finial: 14.5" high.
