Puppet hand fragment, wood, Japanese, Meiji period. This Meiji period Bunraku wooden arm is a rare and intriguing piece of art. Bunraku is a form of traditional Japanese puppet theatre, founded in Osaka in the beginning of the 17th century, which is still performed in the modern day. This hand is in an elegant ladylike pose and possibly held an accessory of some kind. Mounted on a custom steel stand, this discarded part of a puppet has been transformed into a unique and rare piece of art.
