About the Item

Extremely Early Burmese Pyu/Mon Bronze Monk, circa 10th–12th Century A rare and evocative solid-cast bronze figure of a seated Buddhist monk, originating from the Pyu or early Mon period of Burma (modern-day Myanmar). Measuring 2 7/8 inches tall (4 inches including custom stand), this small yet profoundly expressive sculpture likely dates back at least 800 years—and possibly over 1000 years—attesting to its great antiquity. The figure depicts a monk in deep contemplation, seated in meditation with a serene yet distinctive face characterized by prominent “bug” eyes, short, rounded ears, and a small, gentle mouth—features typical of the finest examples from this early era. The surface bears an ancient patina of rich earth and green tones, enhancing its timeless presence. From a stylistic standpoint, this work embodies the transitional aesthetic between Pyu and early Mon art traditions, revealing both simplicity of form and spiritual intensity. A remarkable and rare survivor of early Burmese Buddhist art, offered with a custom museum-quality stand for display.
