About the Item

A magnificent polychrome carved bone and wood figure of Chitipati, Shri Shmashana Adhipati, the Glorious Lords of the Charnel Grounds, Mother and Father, Mongolia, 18th century. Carved from bone, the two skeletal figures are portrayed intertwined in an eternal dance upon a lotus pedestal. Their somewhat leonine faces each with three penetrating eyes, mouths set in wide smiles with tongues curled and fangs bared. Both figures wear simple garments carved from wood - skirts around their waists, rippling with the movement of their dance, and long scarves draped around their shoulders, billowing around them. Their heads adorned with a crown of five skulls and topped by a vajra rising from the center of their craniums. The Father holds a bone danda (stick) above his head in one hand, a flaming kapala (skull cup) at heart level in the other. He stands upon a conch shell. The Mother stands in the opposite direction, her head twisted 180 degrees. She holds a sheaf of wheat above her head in one hand, and a flask of amrita (nectar of immortality) at heart level in the other. She stands upon a cowrie shell. This particular figure would have originally been one of a set, situated as part of a three dimensional mandala surrounding a central figure of either Charkrasamvara or his consort, Vajrayogini. Shri Shmashana Adhipati, commonly referred to as Chitipati, are protector deities in the Vajrayana tradition of Buddhism, thought to guard against thieves and secure wealth. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Minor structural damages. Minor fading. The figure slightly loose on the lotus pedestal. With signs of glue repairs to some of the elements. The polychrome faded. A very minor loss to the headdress of the Father figure, as seen in photos.

A Chinese early Qing Dynasty carved and lacquered wood figure of Guanyin, Southern China, 17th/18th century. Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of Compassion and Mercy, is portrayed seated in dhyanasana, one hand raised in viktara mudra, the gesture of teaching and discourse. The great bodhisattva is dressed in heavy, loose robes tied at the chest, with a mantle draped over his shoulders. He looks serenely outwards from heavily lidded eyes.
