About the Item

A beautiful and serene wood and gilt Japanese Amida Nyorai Buddha on display stand/alar (the stand and buddha are attached together) Meticulously hand carved in fine detail (see hands and flowing robes). Gilded throughout. Seated with narrowed eyes in deep meditation on his path to enlightenment with hands offering a blessing. This work is likely from the early to mid Showa period, (1926-1989) but it could be older - perhaps Meiji period. Would be a fantastic addition to any Japanese or Asian art/buddha collection or make for an eye-catching stand-alone accent work in about any setting. Dimensions (including stand): 11" high, 8" wide, 6" deep.

Seated with narrowed eyes in deep meditation and hands in Buddhist Abhaya Mudra position offering a blessing of protection, reassurance, peace, and benevolence. This hand position, also known as the "fear not" gesture, was achieved by Buddha immediately following his enlightenment.
