An extraordinary example of a burlwood natural organic wood coffee, tea or display table and desk hand crafted from a rare golden camphor wood root and burl. This table would make a handsome accent for home or office coffee/cocktail table, or high end store decor and serve as a potential functional display for your treasures and keepsakes. Dimensions: 70 cm, 28 inches high and 150 cm, 60 inches in length and 95 cm, 38 inches in depth. This is a handsome, exceptional one-of-a-kind example, irreplaceable. . Provenance: New England collection and originally acquired from an old Chinese Fujian Provincial collection . The impressive furniture carved and fashioned from one significant tree root with an additional foot added, in an elliptical form with exposed smoothed top in multiple planes and naturalistic natural bark sides the top smoothly polished to expose a fine grained surface. History: It takes an expert's eye to recognize the beauty and potential of root and burl treasures that are found in the wild. Skilled artisans then transform these natural wonders into functional and unique works of art China’s root carving tradition dates far back to the Warring States period, over 2000 years ago. This desk or table called “Chaji” by Chinese can be associated as early as the late Ming Dynasty,17th century. By the 20th century, China’s entrepreneurial furniture makers began crafting more exotic tea and coffee tables and chairs from singular huge roots- some reaching ten feet in diameter. This superb example is among the best work of art to come out of a Fujian family workshop and the private collection of the president of the shop.. in many decades. It is carved from a huge, exotic golden camphor tree root and wood found on the border with Myanmar. The original uncut tree root from which this was fashioned purportedly measured over 10 feet tall!
