About the Item

A rare and interesting Chinese Dehua porcelain (blanc de chine) figure of Kui Xing, one of the five emanations of the Daoist God of Literature (Wu Wenchang), Qing Dynasty, 19th century, China. Kui Xing is portrayed as a lively horned and bearded demon running upon the waves, one foot firmly planted on the head of a large dragon fish, the other leg kicked out behind him, the knee resting upon a cloud pillar. He holds an ingot (partially broken) in one hand, the other hand curled, but empty. Kui Xing, the God of Literature, and more specifically the God of Examinations, is dressed in short, heavy robes. His coat partially open to expose his gaunt chest with exposed ribs. A taotie (ogre) mask adorns his skirt. With losses to the ingot and the cloud pillar.
