About the Item
A fantastic Chinese cast bronze censer in the form of two Buddhistic lions play fighting, late Qing Dynasty, late 19th century, China.
The censer formed as a pair of Buddhistic lions, also known as foo lions, engaged in a play fight. The large lion posed in a dramatic play bow, tail raised high, and mouth open with teeth bared in a wide roar. The smaller lion playfully bites the larger lion's high, arched back. The head of the smaller lion removable, and serves as the lid for the censer.
Both lions powerfully modeled, with wonderful musculature, floppy ears, and full manes that run down their backs to connect to the bushy tails.
The raised tail of the larger lion open, and possibly serving as a candle holder. The tail separated from the body, but fitted with a peg to sit securely.
The bronze with a rich, dark patina.
