About the Item
Found in the tombs of ancient Chinese emperors and aristocrats, bi discs such as this have a mysterious and spiritual history, and their function and significance remain uncertain. Thought to provide a conduit to the heavenly realm, bi discs are defined by their round, flattened shape and always carved of fine jade or stone.
This contemporary bi disc is carved from opaque hardstone with mottled, turquoise-green color, reminiscent of Chinese celadon porcelain. Set on a custom metal stand, the bi disc layers into minimal interiors as an abstract sculpture with soft texture.
