About the Item
Found in the tombs of ancient Chinese emperors and aristocrats, bi discs such as this have a mysterious and spiritual history, and their function and significance remain uncertain. Thought to provide a conduit to the heavenly realm, bi discs are defined by their round, flattened shape and always carved of fine jade or stone.
This contemporary bi disc is carved from a dense hardstone with jade-like translucency and mottled brown color. The surface is carved in low relief with two celestial dragons, swirling and abstracted in the archaistic style of ancient bronze wares. Large characters in ancient script convey a blessing for wealth and success, a traditional idiom and a popular New Year's greeting.

This charming teapot dates to the late Qing dynasty and is hand-carved from a hollow length of bamboo to appear as though parceled by a cloth strung with tassels. The teapot has a squat, rounded form and a dark brown finish, reminiscent of Yixing red clay teapots...
