About the Item
This very nice carved plaque of good size comes from China and was made circa 1900. The stone is a rich combination of dark, light and emerald green. Sliced from a boulder washed and tumbled in a river the plaque is carved to both sides and rests now on a rosewood purpose-built stand. The front of the piece is of a group of qilin frolicking in a naturalistic landscape. The qilin or mythical beasts are surmounted by a flaming pear in the sky. The reverse side has bats among prunus set out in a scenic landscape. The stone rests in a cradled space carved into the stand allowing the piece to be picked up and viewed easily. The carvings nature has nice attention to detail and a mellow soft polish.
