About the Item

Kamakura Japanese Buddhist Celestial Figure made out of lacquer. Probably originally flanked one side of the head of a very large Buddha in a temple. Size is huge at approximately 28 inches tall, 19 inches wide, and 8 inches deep. Appears extremely old, with remains of original black lacquer. Probably over 500 years old. Possibly Kamakura period. It probably avoided damage because it was in a high place in a temple for almost all its life. Note the compelling (Kamakura) face. Note: I had a closely related pair of these that were made of the same material. They were smaller and possibly a little bit later, and not quite of the same very high quality, but were otherwise remarkably similar.
