About the Item

A Fine Shunga Mask Netsuke of Okame with Hidden Erotic Carving Japan, Edo to Meiji period (circa 1850–1900) Material: Stained boxwood A charming and finely carved mask netsuke depicting the smiling face of Okame (Otafuku), the traditional goddess of mirth, fertility, and domestic happiness. Her characteristic round cheeks, closed eyes, and joyful expression are beautifully captured in warm-toned boxwood with rich patination and subtle blackened highlights. On the reverse, a cleverly hidden shunga carving is revealed within a recessed cavity, flanked by ginkgo leaves. The erotic motif—discreetly integrated into the organic lines of the carving—reflects the playful juxtaposition of purity and sensuality, common in Edo-period netsuke art. The piece embodies the humorous and symbolic duality often explored in Japanese netsuke: the outward innocence of a folkloric mask concealing an intimate, erotic surprise. In good condition.
