About the Item
A fabulous shishi (shi-shi) 獅子 guardian lion okimono sculpture by renowned Japanese Bizen Yaki ware pottery master Fujiwara Tousai, perhaps originally designed as a koro/ incense burner. The detail and craftmanship are really quite remarkable (see the intricate facial detail). We have not come across another work quite like it.
Bizen Yaki ware is a Japanese pottery known for its unglazed, rustic, earthy aesthetic, created in the Bizen region of Okayama Prefecture. It is characterized by shifting natural clay colors, textures, and unique marking made spontaneously by natural ash glaze during the firing process.
Fujiwara Tosai was born in 1898 during the Meiji Period. He was the first generation of a line of famed bizen ceramic family artists that continues today ( with later generations including Living National Treasure Fujiwara Kei and his son, Fujiwara Yu, who are also renowned Bizen potters). He died in 1978.
The work is signed by Tousai.
A special, relatively large and heavy piece. Would be a great addition to any Japanese/ Asian art or sculpture collection or make for an eye catching stand alone accent piece in about any setting.

This is truly a wonderful piece with clear age and a nice patina to it. Very unique. We have not seen another quite like it. The monk appears to have glass eyes which gives his expression a very humanistic feel. The head is removable (please see the last image).
From a collection of Japanese arts and artifacts. Most likely dates back to the Edo period.
