About the Item

This rare hand-carved wooden panel originates from a traditional Dayak long house in Borneo, Indonesia, and dates to around the early 1900s. Finely carved in relief, the elongated panel features a powerful dragon motif—an important symbolic figure in Dayak culture, associated with protection, strength, and the spiritual connection between the human and ancestral worlds. The carving runs horizontally across the length of the panel, its sinuous form accentuated by rhythmic patterns and textural detailing achieved through skilled handwork. The surface bears a beautiful, age-worn patina, with softened edges, surface erosion, and traces of wear that speak to decades of exposure within a communal architectural setting. These imperfections enhance its authenticity and underscore its ceremonial and cultural significance. Once an integral decorative element of a Dayak long house, this panel now stands as a striking sculptural artifact. It functions equally well as a wall-mounted object or focal piece, bringing a sense of history, ritual, and indigenous artistry into a contemporary interior.
