I have shown a yatate to many of my Japanese acquaintances here in Tokyo, and was surprised to discover that most did not even know what it was! Artists and calligraphers usually knew right away, though.
A yatate (pronounced yah-tah-teh) is a Japanese portable writing set. The yatate has been around since the Kamakura period (1185-1333). It contains a traditional Japanese bamboo brush and an ink pot filled with cotton or silk which holds liquid sumi ink.
Yatate literally means "arrow Stand."

This is a handsome Japanese mid century heavy hardwood bench hand chiseled on plank in a dramatic "wave" pattern using traditional Japanese tools "Oire Nomi". The butterfly joint at the end reminds us of George Nakashima's popular technique he used on his famous mid century tables.
Solid and Heavy. Genuinely old waxed chocolate patina from care. We have applied a further protective coat of bees wax to ensure continued weather resistant use.

An attractive and sturdy antique lantern with a distinct eastern thematic "ikebana flower" motif carved into five firebox side panels. The startling sinewy plant motif strongly suggest Asian ikebana. The round tops were cleverly designed with 12 flower petals.
Fine original used garden condition with an attractive natural patina appropriate to age- just the way we like to find them.
