About the Item
Truly stunning pair of hand-carved wood Japanese buddha statues / sculptures that sit serenely atop their lotus petal thrones. The intricately carved details and wonderfully vivid coloring (especially on the flame-like halos) make this pair quite special.
The Buddha on the left sits elevated on the elephant (to symbolize the great power of Buddhist practice in overcoming all obstacles) with hands clasped together in meditation is the Fugen Bosatsu Buddha - Bodhisattva of universal goodness, virtue, and worthiness - and represents the wisdom of the Nyorai.
The Buddha on the right sits upon a Shi Shi lion with a sword in hand is the Monju Bosatsu - representing protection from evil spirits and the bringing of happiness and who in contrast symbolizes wisdom and the enlightened mind (realization).
In Japanese, the Fugen and Monju Buddhas are often shown flanking the Historical Buddha (Shaka Nyorai) in a grouping called the Shaka Trinity with Fugen placed to the right of the central Shaka Nyorai Buddha statue and Monju situated on the left. In this triad, Fugen is often depicted holding a lotus flower and riding an elephant (to symbolize the great power of Buddhist practice in overcoming all obstacles). Monju is frequently depicted with a sword in one hand (to cut through ignorance), holding the Sutra of Wisdom in the other, and sitting atop a roaring Shi Shi lion.
These two works came from a closed temple in Japan and likely date back to the late Meiji period / early Show period but could be older.
Would clearly be the crown jewel of any Buddha or Asian / Japanese artifacts collection or a very eye-catching stand-alone accent pair of buddhas in about any setting.

Meticulously hand carved in such fine and amazing detail (see hands and flowing robes). Gilded throughout. Seated with narrowed eyes in deep meditation and hands in Buddhist Abhaya Mudra position offering a blessing of protection, reassurance, peace, and benevolence. This hand position, also known as the "fear not" gesture, was achieved by Buddha immediately following his enlightenment.

A carved wood buddha with lacquered surface in the style of Erku (1632–1695), a monk from Edo period who was famous for hand-carving Buddha statues in a primitive style. From a single wood block of what appears to be cedar, the standing buddha was carved in an unpolished manner with exposed knife strokes that effectively depicted a subtly smiling face and the folding of the cascading robes. The rustic style is full of Mingei charm being a great example of Japanese Buddhism...
