About the Item

This seated stone statue of Jizo Bodhisattva, unique to Sado Island (Niigata Prefecture), is believed to have been created during the Edo period. Sado Island is home to a small Jizo hall known as "Nashi-no-ki Jizo," where numerous stone Buddha statues, dedicated by people since the Edo period, have been enshrined. The sight of stone Buddha statues, nearly filling the entire ground, conveys the daily prayers and wishes of the people of that time, as well as their sincere desires for the growth of their children and recovery from illness. It is highly likely that this work was one of these "migawari Jizo." What is Migawari Jizo? Sado Island's Jizo worship is based on the concept of "migawari Jizo." This belief is based on the belief that Jizo statues take on the misfortunes, illnesses, and suffering that would otherwise befall people. It was a widespread custom to offer Jizo statues to pray for the protection of children's illnesses and family misfortunes. It is highly likely that this work was also dedicated as such a substitute. Photographs of similar "Nashi-no-ki Jizo," stone Buddha statues are included for reference. About Sado Island Sado Island is a large island in the Sea of Japan, located northwest of the Niigata mainland. During the Edo period, it was home to the Sado Gold Mine, one of Japan's largest gold mines, and flourished as an economic and cultural center. Furthermore, as a penal colony, many cultural figures and intellectuals settled here, fostering a unique artistic and religious culture. Against this backdrop, numerous stone Buddha statues were carved throughout the island, inspired by the simple yet deep religious faith of the island's people. Features of this Work This stone Buddha is a seated Jizo statue made of sandstone, a common sight on Sado Island. Compared to the Sado stone Buddhas I have worked with to date, its striking, slightly reddish color is striking. The soft, sandstone-like surface is appealing, and the statue's warm, simple expression and the figure with its hands clasped quietly on its lap create a truly endearing presence. The statue is moderately large, measuring 23.4cm W x 12.6cm D x 33.4cm H and weighing 9.4kg, making it both striking and easy to handle. It would look beautiful on a display stand, chest, or console table, making it an iconic piece for any space. Condition: While there is some weathering over the years, there are no major imperfections and it is in excellent condition for an Edo-period stone Buddha statue. Because it is made of sandstone, very small particles may irritate your fingers when you touch it; please understand this is a characteristic of the material. Stone Buddha statues, which are rooted in the religious culture of Sado Island, are currently only available to collectors, so they will likely become increasingly difficult to obtain. They are also valuable as collectibles. This is a highly recommended piece that will bring a tranquil atmosphere to any space. Item Number: SC145
