About the Item

This is an old Japanese wooden carving of a rabbit, a precious artifact crafted in the late Edo period (early 1800s–1860s). It was discovered at a Buddhist temple. Made from pine, the wood grain forms bold, flowing patterns that resemble the natural fur of a rabbit. In Japan, rabbits have long been considered auspicious animals—symbols of longevity, prosperity, and leaps forward in life. Within temple settings, rabbit figures are often associated with beliefs connected to the moon, as well as prayers for a bountiful harvest. For these reasons, wooden rabbits like this one were placed as protective and symbolic objects in temple halls and sacred grounds, holding deep meaning for worshippers. Despite its age, this piece has remained nearly completely intact. There is some natural decay on the underside due to age, but aside from that, its condition is exceptionally well-preserved—almost miraculous for a wooden sculpture of this era. Traces of its original pigment still remain, with subtle red tones in the ears and black detailing around the eyes. These remnants offer a glimpse into the hands and artistic vision of the craftsman who created it centuries ago. Please note that a small amount of wood dust may come loose when unpacking, which is a natural characteristic of antique wood. There are no signs of insect damage, so you can welcome this piece with confidence. The aged surface holds a quiet depth and presence that only time can impart.
