About the Item
This lovely antique Japanese bamboo basket was from an unknown artist circa late Meiji Period (1868-1912), likely turn of the 20th century. It features a classic form that derived from the Chinese basket but with a decisively Japanese origin, with the use of natural burl wood branches as the handle. Lacquered in a dark brown, the basket was constructed with techniques alternating between mat plaiting on the upper body that morphed into a double wall with armor plaiting on the lower part. The base was done in a tight chrysanthemum plaiting.
The hand of this ikebana basket was composed of three pieces of wood branches with prominent burl knots and lacquered in a similar dark brown color, rendering the piece a naturally rustic and poetic appeal.

Japanese Bamboo Basket Ikebana by Abe Motoshi
By Abe Motoshi
Located in Atlanta, GA
A Japanese Ikebana bamboo basket woven by artist Abe Motoshi (Japanese, b. 1942). Constructed with lacquered reddish Madake bamboo and rattan with technique of open and irregular twinning, the basket features an organic form with undulating woven surface with wavy crossing lines. The basket appears simple and refined, but the making process is deceivingly sophisticated. Clean and precise, it is of the signature style of Abe Motoshi's.
The basket is signed on the base. It comes with the original tomobako storage box with inscription of the title on the lid as well as the artist's name and seal under the lead. A yellow wrapping cloth and a printout of the artist's biography from Tai Modern...
