A best find from our recent Japanese Acquisitions Beautiful original blue patina Signed by its temple donor "donated by Kobayashi Kanzaburo, Feb 1923, " (Taisho 12) Japanese large, substantial antique solid cast bronze temple bell Bonsho with beautiful original handsome patina from age. Undoubtedly commissioned for donation to their family temple or shrine. The rarely found inscription on its side panel explains its history in great detail of this Buddhist bronze bell. Cast over eighty years ago- it is cast in solid bronze in a larger than normal scale. Please note its truly amazing blue verdigris patina and wonderful top facial loop. This temple bell Bonsho was sourced from an old Japanese Nagoya collection this year. This bell possesses an original dark green patina carefully originating from years of use, just the way we like to find them. Dimensions: Big, bell is 20 inches tall and 10 inches wide Pleasing bold resonating sound. We will include a complimentary heavy duty striker as well (photo) Quality: Heavily cast with thick walls, fine patina, old and original surface casting marks are visible which is not unusual for these instruments This bell is a hard to find in this size; most found today are much smaller in scale. Photographed in natural day light. History of Japan's temple bells: Rather than containing a clapper, -bonsho- is struck from the outside, using either a handheld mallet or a beam suspended on ropes. Antique Japanese bronze temple bells have a handle of dragon heads called ryuzu, protrusions called chi chi or nyu and to improve resonance of sound, protruding, tsuki-za, striking panels and in some instances possess a mei-bun inscription of the bell's history. Bonsho or Buddhist bells known as tsurigane (hanging bells) or great bells are large bells found in Buddhist temples throughout Japan, used to summon the monks to prayer. The Genroku period in Japanese history, is an era from 1688-1704, and characterized by a rapidly expanding commercial economy and the development of a vibrant urban culture centered in the cities of Kyoto, Osaka, and Edo (Tokyo). Hard to find with its attractive patina- this is an authentic indication that this bell had actually hung for quite some time and had been used functionally. At the top, the handle (ryûzu) is crafted in the form of two mirrored dragon heads. Around the upper portion of the bell, the pronounced bosses Fu (chi) are arranged in five rows of five. Lower sections are surrounded by embossed cartouches with a flower-shaped striking panel (tsuki'za).
