Japanese Bronze Deer Incense Burner, Koro, Meiji Period, late 19th c, Japan

About the Item

An elegant and ethereal Japanese bronze censer, koro, in the form of a deer, Meiji Period, late 19th century, Japan. The deer is portrayed standing upon thin, spindly legs, one leg slightly bent, the hoof just off the ground, as if about to take a timid step. The deer's head is turned to face the viewer, a calm, but alert expression on its demure face, with eyes wide open under prominent lashes. A pair of gracious eight point antlers adorns its head. The slim form of the deer is elegantly proportioned, with a lithe body, thin legs, a long and elegant neck, and short tail. A heavy openwork cover formed as a saddle of scrolling leaves of wisteria and sakaki within a woven border of intertwined wisteria vines and sakaki tree branches. The deer's body is hollow to accommodate the burning of precious incense. The openwork cover allowing the smoke to escape and diffuse in an attractive manner. The bronze of a rich and warm honey brown color, darkening to an almost reddish bronze at the head, possibly due to exposure to the incense smoke. The form, stance, expression, and saddle motifs of this deer all follow very closely to those of the iconic and captivating Deer Mandalas of Kasuga Shrine, in which a deer is portrayed festooned in elaborate tack, a sakaki tree with intertwined wisteria growing from the elaborate saddle upon its back, and a luminous disc within the canopy of the tree. In this form, the deer is considered the sacred vehicle of the Shinto deity Takemikazuchi, the God of Thunder. Wisteria is considered a symbol of Kasuga Shrine and its historical patrons, the Fujiwara clan. The sakaki tree is a sacred evergreen tree associated with Shinto kami. A moon disc with images of
