About the Item

A fantastic and dynamic Japanese cast bronze censer in the form of a roaring shishi with a brocade ball, Taisho period, circa 1920, Japan. The large bronze incense burner, known as a koro, is formed as a dramatic shishi (guardian lion, foo lion, or foo dog) pouncing upon an openwork brocade ball. The shishi censer in four parts - the lion, the tail, the censer cover, and the ball. The whole is presented on a lacquered burl wood slab stand. The shishi is powerfully rendered, with wonderful musculature and a fierce, yet also somehow friendly, expression on its face, with bulging eyes and floppy ears, its mouth open wide. The hair and fur is also beautifully detailed, the long hairs of the mane, tail, and even eyebrows, swirling and rising to short peaks (reminiscent of the Buddha's "snail curls" hair). The large, bushy tail alive with movement. One of the swirls of fur on the lion's back acting as the censer cover, complete with small vents to allow smoke to escape while the censer is in use. The playful lion wears a harness embellished with various tassels. The shishi rests its front paws on an openwork "brocade" ball, showing off its playful nature. Condition:
Wear consistent with age and use. Minor structural damages. Minor fading. The lion with a stable crack where the right ear meets the head. The ball with some slight denting and a small separation to the underside. The burl wood stand with scratching to the surface and wear and loss to the lacquer at the edges.
