Unusual and rare doll find Nine (9) early and charming hand painted and signed Kokeshi "Bobbble Head" Dolls from Old Japan. Man and wife with seven children (nested inside), total nine dolls. Dolls have original old paint with patina and stamped Japan from the 1920s-1930s era. They were later pencil signed "Debbie 1968". A beautifully preserved set of Japanese Folk Art hand carved and hand painted Kokeshi dolls one of Japan's most popular antique doll collectibles and unique handicraft forms. They are collected internationally. These hand carved solid Kokeshi doll were made of Itaya-kaeda (Japanese maple) hard wood. They are hand lathe turned and have hand painted designs of such things as kimono and are signed by the Japanese artist. Dimensions: Tallest 5 inches tall and shortest child is 1 inch tall Man and wife are stamp signed Japan. Provenance: these come from an old American kokeshi doll collection Hand carved. Hand painted. Unique group. About Kokeshi Dolls: Kokeshi are a popular form of Japanese dolls, originally from northern Japan. They can date back to the earliest part of the 20th century. Old antique examples are widely collected and typically hand carved and hand painted from wood with a simple trunk and an enlarged head. The heads are simply painted with a few lines to define the face. The body may have a variety of designs including florals and flora painted in red, black, and sometimes yellow, and covered with a layer of wax. One characteristic of kokeshi dolls is their lack of arms or legs. The bottom or sides are typically marked with the signature of the artist. These hand carved solid Kokeshi doll were made of Itaya-kaeda (Japanese maple) hard wood. They are hand lathe turned and have hand painted designs of such things as kimono and are signed by the Japanese artist. Old antique specimens can sell up to thousands of dollars for master works.
