Japanese Fine and Early "Shunga" Tosa School Erotic Painting, circa 1700

From our most recent Japanese Acquisitions. Here's a rare find. This very early hand painting on ivory colored paper from the Tosa School emanates from an old English collection and is the earliest example we have had the pleasure of collecting. It is circa 1700. This superb painting on paper was originally part of a very old makimono or horizontal hand scroll. This design is superb quality. The painting of the detailed diaper patterns are particularly finely executed and enhanced with gold pigment. The subject: A Woman and man. The woman's long tresses are used to wonderful decorative effect in a tradition that goes back to the Heian Period in the 8th. century. Amusingly the man is wearing nothing except his courtiers hat. This shunga style of the Tosa school heavily influenced later Ukiyoe painting and since there was no tradition of nude drawing at that time or until late 19th. century, the anatomy is early and rare, an important first step in Shunga art concept origination. This scene is masterfully hand-painted with good detailing of their robes, faces, and anatomy. This hand painting is quite precise, clearly executed by a professional artist. It is in very good condition with light discoloration from appropriate age and with vibrant colors. Photographs are taken in natural light while this painting is under a protective plastic sleeve. Most shunga are a type of ukiyo-e, usually executed in woodblock print format. Finest Quality Dreamstone Inlaid Chair China- an extraordinary prolifically crafted example of an antique hand carved hardwood chair inlaid with multiple natural dream stone "paintings" plus "butterfly and mother of pearl" inlays in its hardwood arms and seat, late 19th century. This type of old Chinese furniture art form with marble inlay is centuries of years old dating as far back as the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). Fine round and rectangular dream stones depicting mountains and the natural outdoor scenery are inlaid in the seat, back and interior sides of this fine furniture example. Thin marble inlaid stone "paintings" are approximately 1/4" thick and are cut from a large slab of rough material revealing incredible patterns in soft white and gray colors.
