Japanese Fine Hand-Carved Shunga Erotic Folk Sculpture, Signed and Boxed

From our most recent Japanese Acquisitions Travels. Here's a rare find. This very fine authentic Japanese hand-carved and hand-painted wooden Shunga erotic sculpture of a passionate embracing meiji period couple is a one of a kind. It is accompanied by its original signed wooden collector box tomobako. According to reliable sources, this artist's works are known but few sculptures exist today. We are continuing to research this master artist further. Carved from one block of wood, the couple are masterfully carved and carefully hand painted with authentic Geisha costume from old Japan. Notice the detailing of their robes, faces, and anatomy. The hand painting is precise. Dimensions: 6 inches high and 8 inches width History of Japanese Shunga Art: Shunga is a Japanese term for erotic art. Most shunga are a type of ukiyo-e, usually executed in woodblock print format. While rare, there are extant erotic painted handscrolls which predate the Ukiyo-e movement.[1] Translated literally, the Japanese word shunga means picture of spring; "spring" is a common euphemism for sex.
