About the Item
A charming Japanese Edo Period (1615-1868) seated wooden figure. This figure is likely Buddhist, and would have sat outside a temple. The serene seated figure is wearing a robe and hat, and holding a scroll in the left hand. The right hand likely once held a staff or sword. Such figures were guardians. It had a black and red hat, and the entire figure is painted in polychrome, with red, black and blue.
When new, the polychrome would have been more vibrant and intact, but since such figures were usually placed outside temples or shrines, fading and loss of paint is common. On the base is an ink symbol in kanji - possible a signature.
