About the Item

This is an old female sculpture made in Japan. It is estimated to have been made in the late Showa period (1960s-1980s). The material used seems to be lauan wood, and the gentle expression of the wood grain gives the entire sculpture a natural warmth. The calm face with closed eyes gives the impression of quietly calming the viewer's mind and making him or her feel gentle. The entire surface is beautifully marked with machete marks, and the shadows created by the carved marks accentuate the sculptural appeal of the piece, which transcends the framework of a wood sculpture. The texture of the piece, which is not smooth, seems to convey a sense of humanity and the artist's breath. It also has a mysterious power to create a soft atmosphere in a space, despite its dignified presence.
