About the Item

This is an old wood carving made in Japan. It is a female figure by an unknown artist, and is estimated to have been made in the late Showa period (1960s-1980s). The statue is carved from a single block of cedar wood, and is characterized by her soft facial expression and her hair pulled back in a ponytail. The face is delicately sculpted, yet leaves a somewhat neutral impression, giving the viewer a quiet lingering impression. The calmness that resides in her dignified appearance gives her a presence that speaks to the viewer. The most fascinating aspect of this sculpture is the machete carving throughout. The rough carving marks suggest the movement and rhythm of the artist's hand, and give us a sense of the act of “making” itself behind the finished form. This primitive strength brings a deep spirituality to the work as a whole. The texture of cedar, a natural material, also adds a beautiful expression to the work. The flow of the wood's grain echoes the expression of the sculpture, creating a unique presence. The shadows stand out depending on the angle of the light, giving the piece a powerful impression of serenity. Just by placing it in a space as an art piece, the air of the place is tightened and a sense of depth is created. Regardless of whether it is Japanese or Western, this piece is suitable for tranquil interiors. Weight: 7.5 kg ____________________________________ Our Philosophy Objects always tell the truth. All I can do is just to face with them sincerely and give them deep affection as much as I can. There is no boundary of nationalities and of eras in beauty. But I think now is the time we choose 'Japanese style' and it will be the best way to remind us of what we are losing today and to question us about an essence of beauty again. I hope that you can touch the memories which the objects here have, feel and think of something invisible but exists undoubtedly.
