Simple Memorial Buddha A single stone seated Buddha in meditation and who complacently sits with Kanj engraved to each side of this sculpture Good garden candidate .In Japan, Kṣitigarbha, known as Jizō, or respectfully as Ojizō-sama, is one of the most loved of all Japanese divinities. His statues are a common sight, especially by roadsides and installed in private shrines. This handsome hand carved example is sculpted from solid medium gray stone, still retains much of its oldpatina and and dates to the 19th century. The lower frontal area appears to have purposely had some of the kanji defaced to disguise likely the recipients name. Good garden candidate with an authentic even patina and sublime spiritual aura. Condition : overall softening of lines and contours. Handsomely weathered from appropriate age. This carved stone stele depicts the historical Buddha, known also as Shaka, Shakyamuni, or Siddhartha Gautama. Seated in perpetual meditation, the Buddha embodies virtues of wisdom and composure. Hand-carved of limestone in the style of Northern Wei (386-535) statuary, the Buddha is depicted upon a lotus plinth with legs crossed in lotus position. His hands are held downwards in bhumisparsha mudra, a gesture representing the moment that the Buddha claimed the earth as witness to his awakening. The Buddha has a peaceful, benevolent expression and is framed by a halo of concentric circles.
