Beautiful gilt example- first we have seen of this historic ancient horse style censer form From our recent Japanese acquisitions in original condition with original attractive gilding present. Japan, an attractive and iconic ancient horse form cast two part censer with its original gilt and green patina. Its saddle is easily removeable to insert your favorite incense. Patterned after an ancient Japanese Elite Haniwa model horse from the Kofun period (593-710 AD), this model horse sculpture has creatively been adapted to a contemporary incense vessel. The boldly modeled steed with separate saddle displays its bridle and ornamental trappings of that early period. About Japan's Ancient Kofun period: Important large-scale sculptures such as this one were placed in tombs of the elite and wealthy as significant status symbols emblematic of ruling classes. Kofun burial mounds, distinctive earthen structures, were burial mounds built for the people of the ruling class during the 3rd to 7th centuries in Japan. Kofun mounds contained large stone burial chambers. Unglazed pottery figures called Haniwa were often buried under the circumference of the kofun. Fine original used garden condition with original gold gilt patina appropriate to its age. Its large imposing eye openings allow incense sticks to be inserted. Heavy cast quality with original gilt and green patina from age. Dimensions: 6.5 inches tall and 6.5 inches wide Photographed in natural day light.
