About the Item

Precious Natural Shikoku - Mesmerizing Blue Stone Basin Tsukubai Japan, a large, handsome and unique antique natural organic shaped stone water basin planter -tsukubai- created from rare blue shikoku stone and sourced from a decades old garden. This is a unique and visually attractive garden planter or water basin fashioned by nature out of a solid blue-ish granite type of stone coming from southern Japan. Also known as lyo stone, it is a very valuable Japanese stone type full of character. Shikoku stones are seen as national cultural heritage by the Japanese government, making export very difficult. Thanks to our strong bond we share with our Japanese partners who assist us in finding best antiques , we are able to offer this superb large example. One of a kind and coming from a sixty year old Nagoya antique garden ornaments collection. Substantial Dimensions: 19 inches tall and 38 inches wide and 22 inches deep; the interior bowl is approximately 17 inches in length and 8 inches depth perfect for flower plants or floating flower bouquets for special occasions. This tsukubai possesses unique qualities and represents one of the finest old world Japanese garden antiques we have been fortunate to locate in our most recent Japanese acquisitions travels. Appropriate for tea garden “purification” entry areas, they also make wonderful contemporary artistic statements as water/floating flower vessels, planters, or as eye appealing, stand alone work of art placed in your favorite space. Beautiful natural design. Only one. Whether you install flowers, leafy vines, succulents, stones , or floating flowers in glistening water- this rare shaped stone basin will never cease to amaze. History: Water basins Tsukubai are singularly the most popular, frequent and practical garden ornament found in Japanese gardens. They symbolize Buddhist “purification” and are usually strategically placed in gardens or as an indoor entry tokanoma accent to allow visitors opportunity to cleanse hands prior to participating in a tea ceremony event or before honoring a shrine or temple. These kinds welcome visitors to stop and bow in a respectful, humble manner to perform purification of body and soul ritual.   Lifetime guarantee of authenticity: All of our Asian works of art come with our Lifetime Authenticity Guarantee.

Large Japanese Pottery Charger in the Manner of Shoji Hamada and Toshiko Takaezu
Located in Studio City, CA
A truly gorgeous, sumptuously, richly, and darkly glazed, hand-decorated large Japanese studio pottery charger. The craftsmanship is exquisite. The piece radiates in the light and features an abstract trailed glaze design. The work is very reminiscent of Japanese master potters Shoji Hamada and Toshiko Takaezu (the previous owner lived half of each year in Hawaii where Toshiko lived and collected both her and Hamada's works). Possible marker's impressed mark/ chop signature along the edge of the lower rim (please see photos). Would be a great addition to any Japanese or Asian pottery/ ceramics...
