About the Item

This is a stone statue of two priestly deities carved side by side, believed to have been made in the mid to late Edo period (around the 18th to 19th century), and is one of the objects of worship called “Sotai Dosojin. These statues were erected at village entrances and road junctions to pray for the safety of travelers and good health within the village, and were often depicted in the gentle monk-like form of a Jizo Bosatsu. This stone statue is no exception, with a simple and warm face that gives the viewer a sense of security. This stone Buddha was acquired in Gunma Prefecture and was probably made in the surrounding area. In Gunma and Nagano prefectures in particular, many such twin-bodied Dosojin were made, and it is believed that they were hand-carved by local carpenters and priests themselves. The charm of these works is that they are warmly sculpted, showing the spirit of prayer and simple local piety rather than exquisiteness. In addition, a photograph of a similar object was published in an art book and is included as reference material. The stone material used appears to be andesite, and the texture formed over a long period of time softly envelops the entire piece. The surface of the stone is well preserved, with traces of carving remaining. Dotai Dosojin also played a sacred role in local festivals such as “Dondoyaki,” suggesting that they were closely connected to people's lives from the olden days. Today, the number of such objects is decreasing, and those with this form have become rare. This product is freestanding, so it can be placed stably in various places, such as on a shelf indoors, at the entrance, in the garden, or under the eaves of the roof.
