About the Item

This is an old abstract sculpture made from Yakusugi burl, a sacred and highly prized wood native to Japan. Yakusugi refers to ancient Japanese cedar trees that grow on Yakushima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture, each over a thousand years old. Long revered for their dense grain, strength, and distinct aroma, Yakusugi trees have been regarded as symbols of Japan's natural and spiritual heritage, often used in temple architecture and fine crafts. This particular piece is carved—or perhaps only revealed—from a natural burl of Yakusugi, believed to have been harvested in the early 20th century. The complex swirling grain and lustrous texture, unique to burl wood, are artworks in themselves—formed over centuries by nature alone. The object holds an enigmatic power, combining organic energy and spiritual stillness. It is unclear how much of the form has been shaped by human hands. While parts of the surface appear to have been polished, the overall form seems to retain its natural shape, suggesting that little to no carving may have been done. Regardless, the person who discovered or selected this form must have recognized a sacred presence within it—perhaps evoking Daruma (Bodhidharma), a Buddhist figure, or a divine being. While its exact intention is unknown, the object clearly carries the aura of devotion and contemplation. The front-facing posture exudes a quiet yet overwhelming presence, as if it continues to watch over those around it even now. From different angles, the flowing grain patterns resemble an abstract painting, constantly shifting in expression depending on the viewer’s perspective. There are a few traces of insect activity, but no live insects remain, so the piece is completely safe. These marks are not damage—they are part of the sculpture’s history, etched by time, enhancing its uniqueness and character. With its raw spirituality and natural power, this abstract form transcends its origins as a natural material. It becomes a work of art, embodying the spirit of Yakusugi itself, fused with the human imagination. Weight: 8.5 kg ________________________________ Our Philosophy Objects always tell the truth. All I can do is just to face with them sincerely and give them deep affection as much as I can. There is no boundary of nationalities and of eras in beauty. But I think now is the time we choose 'Japanese style' and it will be the best way to remind us of what we are losing today and to question us about an essence of beauty again. I hope that you can touch the memories which the objects here have, feel and think of something invisible but exists undoubtedly.
